My Thoughts on the Oscars

Did you guys watch the Oscars last night? For the first time ever, I watched it from beginning to end. I had forgotten how long award shows can be!

I'm happy with most of the results, even though I regret to say that I didn't see any of the nominated films this year. The only film that was related to any category that I did see was Tropic Thunder lol. Last year I'm pretty sure I saw almost every single one of the films nominated before the Oscars even aired. That was probably because I had just started dating my boyfriend last year and we had a lot of movie dates. This year, we have been cutting back on the amount of movies we see for full price at the theater and tend to go to the discount theaters when we can. However, I'm glad Kate Winslet won because I'm starting to realize how awesome she is as an actress and as a person. I'm also really glad that Milk won best original screenplay and Sean Penn won for best actor. Sean Penn really makes me want to go watch Milk! And of course Heath Ledger's win was very heartbreakingly wonderful and well deserved. Even though I don't really like repetition and I haven't seen the movie yet, I think Slumdog Millionaire looked to deserve all it's wins too. I also really liked how they had the awards set up and the one thing that stood out to me the most was the fact that they had past winners give acknowledgement to the nominees and hand out awards in their categories. I thought that was really great.

All in all, I actually enjoyed the show this year. It seemed better than it normally does. Maybe it was because I watched the entire thing, start to finish, or maybe I was just in the mood for an award show, who knows. I now want to go watch Milk, The Reader, Rachel Getting Married, Frost/Nixon and Doubt - in that order.

What did you think of the Oscars this year?

  1. Our theater never shows any good movies. We always have to wait on Blockbuster. I did see Benjamin Button though. It was an amazing film.

  2. I live near some places that tend to show what I call Indie movies...but spending over 8 bucks for a movie is a bit much for me at times. I only do that for the movies that I think are worth it lol. We have a theater that shows movies a month or so after they are finished at the big theaters for only a dollar, so I go there the most.

  3. I agree with you that this years Oscars was very different than past shows. I, for one, am a Oscar fanatic! For the past 20+ years, I've been keeping record of the winners and tally of movies/awards.
And having past winners present the award to the new winner is a fantastic move!! It's like passing on the baton at the same time of honoring them!
I have a blog post on this years Oscar. Come for a visit!
And I, too, have not seen any of the films and plan to see them when they come on DVD.
