Books of January

One of my new year's resolutions was to start reading more, so I've decided to share some thoughts on the books I've read and am going to be reading (hopefully ;)) throughout the year.

The first book I picked up and read this month was titled Shopgirl by Steve Martin. I mostly decided to read this book because I loved the movie and thought that if the movie was good, the book should be half way decent. Well I was wrong....the book was way better than just half way decent, it was great!

I'm the type of girl that likes simple books that are easy to read and follow, so this was right up my alley. It was also really amazing how well I could relate to the main character, Mirabelle - a lonely girl working at a glove counter who is a vulnerable artistic young lady. She happens to meet an older man named Ray Porter and the rest of the story is based on their relationship and how their lives unfold with and without each other.

I think I can relate to this story the most because I work in retail, am artistic, have a lot of the same character flaws as Mirabelle, and feel that I deal with life much the same way she does from time to time, just not as drastic. Anyway, even though this book is a light read, it is very enjoyable and I'd recommend it to anyone that likes a bit of dark/realistic comedy.

The next book on my list is another Steve Martin novel - The Pleasure of My Company. I've just started reading it, so hopefully I'll have thoughts on it later this month or toward the beginning of February.

  1. I loved that movie too! I might just have to read the book. I also enjoy a good light read. Right now I am reading "The Friday Night Knitting Club" it is pretty good. When I finish reading it, I am going to give it away on my blog. I plan to give all of my books away after I read them this year. You know, share the love...plus, I just don't have room for anymore books!

  2. So few people know about this book and it's one of my all time favorites. I was thrilled when they made a movie. It's so good, but not as good as the book.

    I found you through Entrecard.
